'Independent Scotland will force out nuclear subs'http://www.thesundaytimes.co.uk/sto/news/Politics/article631955.ece
- Plans to relocate Britain's nuclear deterrent in the event of Scottish independence pose a logistical headache for the Ministry of Defence
... This month’s Holyrood election, which gave the Scottish National Party (SNP) an unexpected overall majority with the power to hold an independence referendum, poses a logistical headache for the Ministry of Defence.
It has been planning to place Britain’s entire fleet of submarines at the Faslane base by 2017, by which time Scotland may have voted for secession.
... a source close to Salmond said: “We regard the removal of Trident as a red line issue and would see it as something that would happen very quickly. It has to be gone from Scotland.”
Angus Robertson, the SNP defence spokesman, said public opinion and most politicians north of the border are opposed to Trident and that continuing to base it in Scotland is making “the most eloquent case for independence”.
... An MoD source said that it remained intent on keeping the nuclear deterrent at Faslane, which is considered “a unique base for submarine activity”.
So, the MoD are "intent on keeping the nuclear deterrent at Faslane" are they? How are they going to do that when the Scottish nation votes for self-determination? Frigates up the Forth at dawn? Guffaw. England is not, and will not be, a tin pot dicatatorship, so the MoD can stop acting as if it is one.
I wonder if anyone fancies polling public opinion in the residential areas around HMNB Devonport. Let's see how they fancy becoming one of the biggest targets in Europe.
Personally, I think that they ought to relocate the Vanguard subs n silos to the Medway. After all, that is approximately the same distance from central London as Faslane is from central Glasgow. I'm sure Londoners will be just as tolerant as Glaswegians have been.
